And Then There Were None

Theatre Production

I experimented with a few options for the theatre production of And Then There Were None, finally settling on a linocut-style of graphic illustrations to communicate the gritty nature of the text and play on the themes of the story; the bee sting, the confession in a bottle, the vile of poison. The story features heavier concepts of suicide and murder which make for interesting graphic concepts but the artwork was to be displayed in a school with children as young as 5 walking past it everyday, hence the more abstract graphics like the fish - being a ‘red herring’. All of the graphics are hand-drawn in charcoal to convey the distressing and uncomfortable tone of the play. The colour scheme is dark overall, with the titles in vivid high contrast.

Alternative Concepts

As well as a typographic option, a second graphic concept was devised around the poem ‘10 Little Soldiers’ – upon which the book is based. The 10 soldiers are arranged in a descending inverted triangle, 4, 3, 2, 1… and then there is none. Overall it was decided that the more illustrative approach would resonate with a wider audience who may be unaware of the link to the soldiers.
