Bishop’s Stortford
Book Award, and
Picture Book Award

Part of the Bishop’s Stortford Festival of Literature

The Picture Book Award is voted for by Year 3 and 4 pupils across schools in Bishop’s Stortford. Organised and hosted by Bishop’s Stortford College Library and promoted throughout the local area via posters, flyers, and social media channels.

Since 2022 the look and feel of the promotional materials has been consistent, using the illustrations from the shortlisted books to create a fun, colourful composition to engage children and parents alike.

Developing the series

The design is composed of cutout elements from each of the nominated titles, which will change year-on-year. The use of composition, balance, and typographic lockup are distinguishing features of the visual identity. Having said that, subtle changes have been made since the whole College rebrand in late 2023 to bring the Picture Book Award into the Bishop’s Stortford College family of assets. Brand colours — ivory and peach — have been added, and the distinctive pink adjusted to fit within this pallet.

The Book Award

In 2022 Bishop’s Stortford College also hosted the Bishop’s Stortford Book Award, aimed at older readers and open to local primary and secondary schools. The creative brief was the same as for the Picture Book Award; to display all of the nominated books in a way that will engage with the audience and encourage participation. I took inspiration from torn billboard advertising, with glimpses of the underlying layers peeping through.
